Philadelphia Eagles acquire Andy Dalton from Carolina Panthers for seventh-round draft pick

The Philadelphia Eagles acquired veteran quarterback Andy Dalton from the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a seventh-round draft pick.

Dalton, 37, provides experienced depth behind starting quarterback Jalen Hurts, who led the Eagles to an 11-6 record in the 2023 season before a 32-9 wild-card playoff loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at home.[1][2]

The former third-round pick (No. 35 overall in 2011) spent the past two seasons with the Panthers, serving mainly as backup to Bryce Young, the No. 1 overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft.[3][4]

In 2024, Dalton started five games for Carolina under first-year head coach Dave Canales, recording a 1-4 mark amid Young's early-season struggles before Young returned to the lineup.[4]

Dalton started nine seasons for the Cincinnati Bengals from 2011 to 2019, compiling a 70-61-2 regular-season record with four consecutive playoff appearances from 2011 to 2014 but no postseason wins.[4]

The Bengals drafted Joe Burrow No. 1 overall in 2020 and traded Dalton to the Dallas Cowboys later that year for a seventh-round pick. He appeared in 15 games with five starts for Dallas in 2020 and 2021.[3]

Dalton signed with the New Orleans Saints in 2022, starting five games with a 2-3 record. Tanner McKee served as Hurts' primary backup during the 2023 season and impressed in the 2024 preseason, starting two games.[5][4]

The addition gives the Eagles veteran competition at the position entering training camp.
