Hubert Davis's Tenure at North Carolina Tar Heels Men's Basketball

Hubert Davis has served as head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels men's basketball team since April 2021, succeeding longtime coach Roy Williams.[1] A former Tar Heels player from 1988 to 1992, Davis averaged 11.8 points per game during his college career and was selected 20th overall in the 1992 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks.[2][3]

In his debut season of 2021-22, Davis led UNC to a 29-8 record and an NCAA Tournament No. 8 seed.[4] The Tar Heels advanced to the Final Four and the national championship game, where they lost to Kansas 72-69 on April 4, 2022, after rallying from a 15-point halftime deficit. Kansas overcame a 16-point second-half deficit to win the title.[4][5]

The 2022-23 season ended with a 20-13 record for UNC, resulting in the program's first NCAA Tournament absence since 2010.[6]

UNC rebounded in 2023-24 with a 29-8 mark, winning both the ACC regular-season and tournament titles. Davis was named ACC Coach of the Year on March 11, 2024.[1][7] As the No. 1 seed in the West Region, the Tar Heels defeated No. 16 Wagner 90-62 on March 21 and No. 8 Michigan State 85-69 on March 23 before falling 89-87 to No. 4 Alabama in the Sweet 16 on March 28, all at PNC Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina.[8][9][10]

Davis's overall record at UNC stands at 78-29 (.729) through 107 games across three full seasons.[6]
