Former Wizards star John Wall returns to Washington as Howard basketball operations president
John Wall Named Howard Basketball Operations President
Howard University officials confirmed Thursday that John Wall has been named president of basketball operations for the school's men's basketball program. The appointment returns the former Washington Wizards guard to the city where his NBA career began. Wall, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, already participates in team meetings, recruit evaluations and transfer target identification.
A historically Black university in Washington, D.C., Howard reached the NCAA Division I men's tournament for the third time in four years and secured its first victory with a First Four win over UMBC in March. Wall served as the program's honorary captain on Jan. 31. He spent his first nine NBA seasons with the Wizards, earned five consecutive All-Star selections, played one season with the Houston Rockets and appeared in 34 games for the Los Angeles Clippers before retiring in August 2025.
Wall expressed prior interest in an NBA front-office role. In his new position, he shapes Howard's strategic vision, mentors players and handles name, image and likeness deals. He reports to general manager Daniel Marks and coach Kenny Blakeney.
The move echoes recent appointments of active NBA players Stephen Curry as assistant general manager at Davidson College and Trae Young in the same role at Oklahoma.
