Mother of NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin urges Gaston County for increased fire department funding after fatal house fire
Mary Lou Hamlin, mother of NASCAR Cup Series driver Denny Hamlin, addressed the Gaston County Board of Commissioners on January 7, 2025, calling for more funding for local fire departments to improve staffing, equipment and emergency response capabilities.[1][3]
The plea came after a house fire on December 28, 2024, at the couple's two-story home in the 1000 block of Cashion Road near Stanley, North Carolina, which killed her husband, Dennis Hamlin, 74.[1][2] Mary Lou Hamlin, 69, suffered severe burns and was airlifted to the Wake Forest Baptist Burn Center in Winston-Salem for treatment.[1]
During the meeting's public comment period ahead of budget discussions, Mary Lou Hamlin recounted pulling her husband from the burning home and expressed frustration over the delayed water supply to firefighting efforts. "There was no water to put out my house," she said.[1][3]
Denny Hamlin, who drives the No. 11 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing in NASCAR's top-tier Cup Series, has competed full-time since 2006.[2] NASCAR issued a statement following Dennis Hamlin's death, noting his support for his son's racing career.[2]
Denny Hamlin's sister, Lisa Chapman, also spoke at the meeting, describing her arrival at the scene and the lack of water on the fire.[1]
Stanley Fire Department units responded to the early-morning blaze, but rural location challenges, including distance to the nearest hydrant, contributed to the delay in applying water, according to officials.[1]
