Steelers legend Jerome Bettis dives into Aaron Rodgers waiting game, team's NFL Draft needs
Bettis defends Rodgers delay, eyes Steelers draft needs
Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Famer Jerome Bettis said players may feel frustrated by Aaron Rodgers remaining an unsigned free agent, but the four-time NFL Most Valuable Player deserves leeway given the team's limited quarterback options. Bettis told Fox News Digital that with no strong alternatives, Rodgers holds unique latitude, especially amid thin depth at the position. He views the holdup as a chance for the backup quarterback to gain valuable repetitions.
The Steelers signed the then-41-year-old Rodgers last year to address subpar quarterback performance. The move paid off as Pittsburgh reached the playoffs under Mike Tomlin, who again posted a winning record. Rodgers, like the prior offseason, continues his waiting game as a free agent, though a return for a 22nd NFL season appears likely.
Over two decades, Pittsburgh maintained steady quarterback play but allowed other areas to weaken, Bettis noted. The running game faltered, receivers underperformed, and defensive support lagged. He emphasized needs at receiver, offensive line, running back and on defense before prioritizing quarterback.
Bettis partners with The Athletic's NFL Draft guide "The Beast" to meet fans in Pittsburgh ahead of the draft there this month. The event helps supporters evaluate prospects they will follow for years.
